P = 4L {Deconstructing Square Space}
Solo show presented by Anupa Mehta Arts
Mumbai Gallery Weekend 2022, Mumbai
January 2022

This exhibition by New Delhi based artist Chetnaa featured three series of monochromatic minimal works, exploring tendencies and potentialities of the square. Presence | Absence, Ombres and Lines in a Grid, the series presented in Mumbai, deconstruct an elemental shape: that of the square. A conscious effort to reduce the pictorial meaning to its bare essence is crucial to the artist’s work.

Chetnaa’s practice revolves around balancing the nuances of the white of the paper and the black of the ink. Following and flowing with the direction of her works she became involved in disintegrating a basic shape: a square, an exploration of balance between positive and negative space, presence and absence.
The series, Lines in a Grid, on the other hand, explores her preoccupation with an elemental form and lines. The simple yet the tenuous weaving of thread through paper brings forth a new order to her minimal geometric musings. Absence of any color and the presence of only shadows defining the work is the essence of the series Ombres.
