Series : Layered Cities 1 – 21

2024

This series of 21 works on paper delves into the layered history of New Delhi, juxtaposing the modern city’s map with that of its ancient predecessor, Shahjahanabad. Through subtle layering, ink, and cutouts, the maps converge and diverge, revealing the palimpsest of time. One piece stands apart, its 22-carat gold outline tracing the contemporary city’s contours, evoking the treasures of the past.
Together, these works navigate the tensions between memory and modernity, inviting the viewer to contemplate the city’s transformation. The maps, once tools for navigation, become a metaphor for the human experience – a complex interplay of past and present, order and chaos.

Fold, Bend & Overlap XI – XII
2024
These two works explore the interaction between light and geometry through the medium of hand-folded paper. The intricate assembly of 750-800 individually painted triangles creates a three-dimensional surface that plays with light and shadow. The first piece presents a gradient of light tones transitioning into darker areas, allowing the natural flow of light to highlight the subtle shifts between surfaces. The second work, with its stark black-on-black composition, emphasizes the play of shadow, where light softly reveals the structure through minimal, but potent, contrasts.
Both works, titled Fold, Bend & Overlap, invite viewers to contemplate the ephemeral nature of light as it bends and flows over geometric forms. They are deeply rooted in minimalist abstraction, where the fleeting interplay of light and shadow becomes the subject, offering a quiet yet dynamic visual experience.impermanence.”

La Fenêtre

The series La Fenêtre (The Window) consists of 18 layered paper works that reflect my ongoing exploration of space, structure, and precision. Windows, is a recurring motif in my practice, symbolizing escape and transformation—emerging from personal experiences of confinement, they offer light, hope, and a passage toward freedom and transformation, reflecting my pursuit for precision and calm.

Ephemera

Growing up in a metropolis, I’ve witnessed Delhi’s metamorphosis—a fusion of polycentric settlements forming its unique identity. “Ephemera” reveals three-dimensional Kirigami paper sculptures on a map of Shahjahanabad, capturing the last vestiges before Lutyens’ transformation. This historic part, though living, reflects ancient splendors succumbing to urban planning. Each sculpture symbolizes remnants of the city’s transformation, portraying a poignant reflection on delicate facets lost to modern constructions. Against a historic map, the series explores the bittersweet dance between preservation and progress, urging contemplation on the evolving cityscape’s delicate balance between heritage and modernity. “Ephemera” stands as an elegy and celebration of Delhi’s enduring spirit.

The Balance

The Balance series consists of seven works, each centred on the precise dissection of a square. The interplay of form and void creates a rhythmic dialogue between stability and fragmentation. This exploration extends into sculpture, where the gold elements are rendered in wood and the blue in steel. The works investigate the tension between structure and transformation, capturing a dynamic equilibrium within seemingly rigid forms.
